Transtec provided a cost-effective rehabilitation solution for the light rail pavement section in Warrington Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, for the Port Authority of Allegheny County.
The Warrington Ave. project began at the intersection of Haberman Ave. on the west end and terminated at Arlington Ave. on the east end and was approximately 2830 feet long. The existing pavement was a severely distressed jointed reinforced concrete pavement (JRCP) exhibiting multiple pavement distress issues. The project was particularly challenging due to the constraints placed on Transtec. The light rail tracks were still in use and could not be taken out of service, and the roadway profile needed to be maintained so that the construction would not impact local businesses. Furthermore, the owner sought a concrete pavement solution since busses heavily trafficked this roadway.
Transtec Results
Transtec used innovation to achieve the desired results. Transtec proposed milling and overlay using a thin fiber-reinforced concrete overlay. Transtec suggested using hydro-blasting to remove the first four inches of distressed concrete pavement and to place a thin asphalt overlay as a leveling course before placement of the fiber-reinforced concrete pavement. The successful project met the requirements of the owner and the surrounding community.
