The Transtec Group Joins Connect 202 Partners to Deliver Pavement Design for the Largest Highway Project in Arizona State History

Austin-based pavement engineering firm The Transtec Group is proud to join Connect 202 Partners, a broad consortium selected by the Arizona Department of Transportation (ADOT) to design, construct, and maintain the South Mountain Freeway Public-Private Partnership (P3) Project.

The Connect 202 Partners were awarded the South Mountain Freeway (designated as State Route 202) project in December 2015 to alleviate congestion from downtown Phoenix. The consortium is led by the Fluor Corporation and also includes Granite Construction Co., Ames Construction Inc., DBI Services, Parsons Brinckerhoff Inc., and other industry leaders.

SR 202 will yield 22 miles of freeway and provide a direct link between the East and West Valley to bypass downtown Phoenix. According to ADOT, the freeway will provide a much-needed alternative to Interstate 10. The project is planned for delivery at $122 million less than the original budget, thanks to the innovative approach offered by Connect 202 Partners.

“The goal of the SR 202 project is to increase mobility around Phoenix, which has experienced unprecedented growth in the last 30 years, and to do so as cost-effectively as possible,” said Dr. Robert Otto Rasmussen, Vice President & Chief Engineer at The Transtec Group. “Our first priority is to employ our experience and expertise in pavement engineering to select and optimize pavements for both initial and long-term quality, particularly considering the extreme conditions in the Phoenix area.”

Design for the project is well underway and is expected to be complete by the end of 2016, with construction through 2019. Operation and maintenance will extend for 30 years post-completion. The Transtec Group has delivered similar work recently on the award-winning Dallas/Fort Worth Connector Project and the I‑4 Ultimate in Central Florida.
