Pavement Engineer Lead

We are seeking a highly experienced Senior Pavement Engineer Leader to lead and develop innovative pavement design, evaluation, and asset management solutions for various industry sectors. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record in technical leadership, project management, and experience with public works, state highway agencies, toll authorities, aviation, and industrial sectors.

Your job will be to assist in leading the Transtec Group pavement engineering team on pavement design, evaluation, testing, and other related pavement engineering work. You will provide pavement engineering and consulting services for a variety of projects and clients. This may include leading field geotechnical and pavement evaluations, engineering analysis, calculations, recommendations, design and development of plans and specifications, and the writing, preparation, and review of reports for the services provided. This will also include review of project plans and specifications to ensure compliance with pavement design recommendations.

You will be responsible for preparing proposals and cost estimates, tracking and evaluating project progress, budgets, and recommending changes. Design, materials, and construction problems must be researched and resolved. Assignment, review, and evaluation of laboratory or field data for inclusion in reports will also be performed. The selected candidate must apply sound engineering principles and be able to communicate complex engineering issues and concepts to technical and non-technical clients and project teams.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Lead safety efforts for team and ensure team follows safety rules and guidelines. Responsible for creating and modeling a safe work environment; demonstrating safety practices. Promote pre-task planning for all projects.
  • Responsible for continuous quality monitoring and improvement on projects. Monitor and promote quality standards and practices.
  • Responsible for providing consistent quality standards on project and proposal delivery.
  • Develop understanding and be aware of project-related risk and how to protect the Company. Be familiar with company risk policies.
  • Senior level engineering professional providing technical direction required for production and completion of both routine and unique or complex projects.
  • Career level, fully competent engineering professional with responsibility for managing detailed phases of projects with moderate to large size and complexity (up to $10 million).
  • Lead pavement design and evaluation for roadway construction and rehabilitation projects, including design-build and P3 initiatives.
  • Oversee pavement field investigations, field testing (FWD, GPR, coring), and data analysis for pavement condition assessments.
  • Manage multi-disciplinary teams and coordinate with clients, contractors, and agencies to deliver high-profile projects.
  • Plan, schedule, conduct, and/or coordinate detailed phases of assigned project work.
  • Make design, engineering, and construction recommendations, adaptations and modifications.
  • Prepare/supervise proposals and reports for small to large projects of varying complexity.
  • Perform quality control review of proposals written by others.
  • Evaluate complex laboratory and field data (e.g., FWD/HWD, GPR, coring, DCP, LWD) for analysis, interpretation and inclusion in reports.
  • Serve as a technical advisor to mid-level and junior-level project team members.
  • Interact directly with clients and project teams on developing scope of services, communicating project progress and findings and recommendations.
  • Prepare/supervise routine and complex engineering reports detailing services provided, findings, and recommendations.
  • Prepare technical reports, design guidelines, and presentations for clients and industry conferences.
  • Support asset management, life cycle cost analysis, and pavement management system implementation.
  • Provide leadership of marketing, sales and business development.
  • Contribute to the development of national and international best practices and standards for pavement engineering.
  • Willingness to travel up to 30% of the time to project sites and meetings.
  • Supervise graduate, field, and project engineering staff.
  • Serve as a Terracon Authorized Project Reviewer.

Requirements:

  • Master’s degree or higher in civil/pavement engineering.
  • Minimum 15+ years’ experience.
  • Demonstrated expertise in concrete and asphalt pavement design, forensic evaluation, and innovative rehabilitation systems.
  • Proficiency in pavement design software and data analysis tools.
  • Strong communication, leadership, and client interaction skills.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) registration.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
  • This position is based in our Austin, TX office.

Preferred Certification:

  • Lead designer or Engineer of Record (EOR) on major projects.
  • Knowledge using AASHTOWare Pavement Software.
  • Knowledge using TxDOT Pavement Engineering Software.
  • Knowledge using FAARFIELD and associated FAA Software.
  • Knowledge using PCASE and PAVER Software.
  • Knowledgeable in pavement design, maintenance, rehabilitation, management and recycling topics.
  • Authorized Project Reviewer status preferred.

Geotechnical Project Engineer

You will assist The Transtec Group pavement engineering team on project management, pavement design, evaluation, testing tasks, and other related pavement engineering work.

As a Project Engineer, you will lead a team of engineers on assigned projects, managing all phases from planning to execution. You will provide hands-on technical guidance, mentor junior staff, and ensure the successful delivery of project objectives. Your focus will be on project-level leadership, collaborating with senior managers and other teams as needed.

You will report directly to senior project managers and collaborate with other teams as needed. You will direct daily activities and mentor junior engineers within your project team. This may include performing and/or leading field investigations, developing design recommendations, pavement design analysis and recommendations, design and development of plans and specifications, observation and inspection, and the writing, preparation, and review of related reports for the services provided. Review drawings and construction to ensure compliance with plans and specifications. Prepare proposals and cost estimates, track and evaluate project progress and budgets, and recommend changes. Research and resolve design and construction problems. Assign, review, and evaluate laboratory or field data for inclusion in reports. Apply sound engineering principles and be able to communicate complex engineering issues and concepts to technical and non-technical clients and project teams. Services may be provided for existing or proposed projects in the transportation, public works, commercial, communications, energy, and/or industrial sectors.

  • Proficient engineering professional responsible for managing and executing projects of small to moderate complexity (up to $1M engineering fee).
  • Lead a dedicated team of engineers on assigned projects.
  • Provide engineering and consulting services for a broad array of projects and clients.
  • Manage all aspects of project delivery from planning through completion.
  • Responsible for the success of your team’s assigned projects, ensuring quality and timely delivery.
  • Prepare cost estimates, specifications, and other project-related documents.
  • Analyze data and perform engineering calculations and analysis.
  • Conduct, coordinate or supervise field investigations, laboratory testing, and evaluation of respective data.
  • Develop plans, schedules, conducts and/or coordinates detailed phases of assigned project work.
  • Make design recommendations, adaptations, and modifications and serves as Professional Engineer of Record.
  • Prepare work scope, proposals, and reports; plan investigations for approval by senior-level professionals.
  • May supervise engineering and field staff including graduate/field engineers, engineering technicians, exploration teams, laboratory staff, and other support personnel.
  • Communicate effectively (frequently and concisely) with the team, managers and clients.
  • Interact with client and the project team in developing the scope of services and communicating project progress.
  • Follow safety rules, guidelines, and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
  • Maintain quality standards on all projects.
  • Willing to travel up to 30% of the time and overnight stay.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering.
  • Master’s degree in civil engineering preferred.
  • 5-8 years’ experience.
  • Professional Engineer (PE) required.
  • Valid driver’s license with acceptable violation history.
  • Knowledge using AASHTOWare Pavement Software.
  • Knowledge using State DOT Pavement Engineering Software.
  • Knowledge of PCI survey by ASTM or project specific method.
  • Some experience with data entry in Pavement Management System software (e.g. Paver).

Web Enterprise Developer

We are seeking a proven full-stack web software developer to join a small yet experienced team as a valued member. Our goal is to hire a full-time in-house (Austin, TX) or remote programmer (within the continental US). This employee will work on the Research team and support various software development efforts.

General Responsibilities:

  • Responsible for writing new code of the highest quality following established patterns and practices, coding standards, and standards outlines by the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) community.
  • Create a geospatial application to manage, visualize, and analyze intelligent construction data.
  • Participate in enhancing and refactoring existing code, gathering code requirements, and testing.
  • May analyze business requirements and provide recommendations for solutions.
  • Participate in company technology projects as needed.

Essential Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Minimum of 5 years of end-to-end full-stack software development experience and an additional 5 years as a standard software developer, preferably in Microsoft platform technologies.
  • Have a track record of successfully working on ambitious and complex projects where problems and solutions are not well defined. You must also be willing to create and modify software solutions based on high-level requirements defined by extremely knowledgeable stakeholders.
  • Demonstrate the ability to operate autonomously and with minimal supervision, create high-quality code, and provide visual demonstrations of your efforts to our stakeholders via Teams or in person. Be able to thrive in a remote environment.
  • Be willing to learn about paving, intelligent construction, logistics, materials, and geospatial technologies, and apply this knowledge to relevant software solutions.
  • You must be enthusiastic, enjoy writing challenging software, bring a fun sense of humor, and enjoy working with other team members who want to be successful in their endeavors.
  • You will own the full software development lifecycle: requirements gathering, design, front-end and back-end development, testing, and deployment.
  • Maintain a moderate and increasing level of proficiency in software and other technologies supported by the department.
  • Follow safety rules, guidelines and standards for all projects. Participate in pre-task planning. Report any safety issues or concerns to management.
  • Maintain quality standards on all projects.

Requirements:

  • Strong software development skills using C#.
  • Strong software development skills using JavaScript-based languages (preferably TypeScript).
  • Strong web development skills using a component-based web platform (preferably Angular).
  • Above average knowledge of Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), enterprise software development, and relational database technologies (preferably SQL Server).
  • A working knowledge of REST APIs, Token-Based security models, and HTTP concepts.
  • A working knowledge of Entity Framework and Language Integrated Query (LINQ).
  • An understanding of coding Patterns and Practices and their importance.
  • An understanding of tiered software architecture, exception-handling, and logging.
  • Strong communication skills in English (verbal and written).
  • Ability to commute to our Austin, TX office or successfully perform your tasks as a remote worker (You must live within the continental US and have access to a quality Internet Service).
